WHAT IS SUCCESS?

To laugh often and love much;

To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;

To earn the approval of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;

To appreciate beauty;

To find the best in others;

To give of one's self;

To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition;

To have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation;

To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived...

This it to have succeeded.

Clackamas County Marriage Policy

2009 CLACKAMAS COUNTY MARRIAGE POLICY

MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

We, the undersigned mental health professionals of Clackamas County, have the unique opportunity and obligation to help strengthen marriages in our community. With this policy we seek to establish community-wide standards for counseling and marriage enrichment resources, which will benefit all marriages and families. Our common mission is to significantly decrease the level of divorce in traditional marriages.

WE AFFIRM:

1. That God has established in Scripture the sanctity and companionship of marriage;

2. That marriage is a lifelong and unique covenant between one man and one woman;

3. That healthy marriages are good for spouses, children, and the community in general*;

4. That it is important to proactively promote and encourage a healthy image of marriage;

5. That we have a responsibility to provide ongoing support to strengthen and nourish existing marriages;

6. That we can accomplish these goals together in community better than working separately.

THEREFORE WE WILL WORK TO:

Provide compassion and competence to those who seek our counsel;

Affirm the sanctity and importance of marriage;

Advocate for healthy marriage whenever possible;

Teach faithfulness within marriage;

Encourage a courtship of at least one year;

Advise at least four months of marriage preparation;

Educate about the impact divorce has on individuals, children and family;

Communicate that the safety of individuals is a primary consideration;

Pursue health and growth in our own marital and family life;

Direct couples toward community resources, such as:

    o Premarital preparation programs;

    o Marriage seminars and workshops;

    o Mentoring couple relationships;

    o Biblical Conciliation resources;

    o Celebrate Recovery Programs;

    o Pastors, mentors health professionals and lay counselors who are supporters of marriage.

COVENANT

I commit to seek the endorsement of these standards in my practice and to encourage others to do so, for the glory of God and the good of our whole community.
